Pfund Wet Film Thickness Gauges

Article No. 14099

Pfund Wet Film Thickness Gauge

The Pfund Wet Film Thickness Gauge consists of a spherical convex surface which is forced through the wet paint layer. An oversized circular paint spot is formed on the glass lens, corresponding to the sum of the thicknesses of both the original undisturbed paint film and the displaced paint film that wets the glass.

Features

  • Ideal for measuring the thickness of wet translucent products such as varnish, laquers and oils etc.
  • A simple 1:1 ratio has been assumed between these two variable thicknesses and used to construct the table furnished with the instrument.
  • Used to measure wet film thickness up to 14.2 mils (360 µm)
  • Conforms to ASTM D1212
  • The Pfund Paint Film Gauge is described in detail in “Physical and Chemical Examination of Paints, Varnishes, Lacquers, and Colors” by H.A. Gardner and G.G. Sward, 13th Edition, (1972). It’s also described under “Method B, Pfund Gauge”, in ASTM D 1212 “Measurement of Wet Film Thickness of Paint, Varnish, Lacquer, and Related Products”.

Procedure

The general plan of the Pfund Paint Film Gauge is shown in the diagram. A convex Lens whose lower surface has a radius of curvature of 250 mm is mounted in a short which slides freely in an outer notched. The compression springs keep the convex surface out of contact with the wet paint film until pressure is applied to the top.

  1. To make a wet film thickness measurement, the gauge is placed as soon as possible on a freshly painted surface and the lens is forced down as far as it will go.
  2. After the pressure is released, the gauge is removed from the surface and the diameter of the oversized circular spot is measured, to the nearest millimeter, directly on the scale engraved on the lens.
  3. By referring to the Table supplied with the Pfund Paint Film Gauge, the thickness of the paint film in either fractions of millimeters or in mils, as well as the number of square feet which would be covered by one gallon of paint at that same thickness, may be quickly determined.
