Model C Wet Film Thickness Gauges

Article No. 14047

Coating Thickness Gauge C 20-60 Mil

The Model C Wet Film Thickness gauge is a precision instrument for use in the laboratory, the field and on the production line. It accurately measures the wet film thickness of paint, varnishes, lacquers, adhesives, inks, gel coats and almost any type of wet film applied to flat or cylindrical surfaces.

Features

The model C gauge was developed by Maynard R. Euverard to take full advantage of features covered in patents issued to him under U.S. Patents 2,507,592 and 3,128,558.  The gauge is in the form of a wheel, approximately two inches in diameter, made up of three disk sections. Two of the disks are of the same diameter, spaced apart adequately for gauge support and are concentric. The third disk, somewhat smaller, is located on the outside of the supporting disks and is eccentric to them.  When the gauge is rolled over a wet film the eccentric disk will pick up the material only at and below the actual thickness, which permits its immediate and direct reading.  The Model C Wet Film Thickness gauge has the following advantages over the earlier Interchemical and Interchemical Type gauges which function in a similar manner.

  • Accuracy certification available
  • The scale is engraved directly on the measuring disk which is moved to the outside of the gauge and eliminates reading errors of parallax.
  • The measuring disk is separated from a supporting disk by less than half the distance found in other gauges for similar use, which minimizes errors due to deviation from flatness of the supporting surface.
  • All gauge markings are engraved rather than stamped to avoid strains in the gauge which could reduce gauge accuracy.
  • Stainless steel surfaces of the gauge are highly polished to enhance gauge cleaning.
  • The support surfaces of the concentric disks are designed to insure the best possible penetration to the coating support surfaces.
  • Development of new "state of the art" jigs and fixtures insure production of each and every gauge to within the closest possible tolerance consistent with the best available tool and die metal working equipment.
  • The gauge bearings are of special design to provide the lowest possible starting torque and to provide ease of cleaning by removal of one of the finger grips. Ball or roller bearings have been found to be unsatisfactory due to their sensitivity to cleaning solutions.
  • The most modern type of three dimensional coordinate measuring machine with a resolution and repeatability equal to or better than 0.0001 inches is now used in the production and inspection of the gauges.
  • Tolerance - Measuring and support surfaces of the Gardco Model C gauges are over six inches in length. The gauge range is within half of this length and each half contains twenty graduation marks. Due to inherent geometry, the gauge should not be used between the first and last two graduation marks of the gauge range. Between these limits the graduation marks are within the tolerance shown in the following table
  • Certifications - Calibration is traceable to the U.S. National Institute of Standards & Technology. Calibration procedures qualify under ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 as applicable, and ISO 9000. Certification of Calibration available at an additional charge

More Information

Whenever, wherever and however coatings are applied, the thickness of application is of paramount importance. If the film is too thin, the hiding power will be poor, and the substrate will show through. In addition, there will be a reduction in the protective capabilities of the coating. If the coating is too thick, not only may there be a loss in intended physical properties, but there will be a reduction in coverage and a proportional increase in cost. The use of the Model C gauge will not only promote uniform application of the specified amount of coating material, but will also insure optimum designed results from the coating used at minimum cost.

FTMS 141c, Method 6183 - "Dry Film Thickness (Mechanical Type gauges)."

Procedure

  1. Select the Model C gauge with the range which will accommodate the thickness to be measured between 10% and 90% of the gauge range.
  2. Grasp the gauge with the thumb and forefinger so that the gauge body is free to turn.
  3. Place the gauge on a freshly coated surface at a thickness position greater than expected and roll the gauge to a thickness less than expected.
  4. The gauge may then be lifted and placed on another part of the surface and rolled in the opposite direction on the unused portion of the gauge.
  5. Examination of the outside eccentric disk will show thickness values at which pick-up of the coating has taken place and the average of these values may be taken as the true coating thickness.
