Gray Scale Hiding Power Chart

A sealed test chart with a series of stripes ranging from light to dark gray and black. The reflectance values of the gray shades are selected with the objective that their color differences (vs the white surround) will be in the geometric sequence: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 CIELAB units.

The test area consists of the entire chart less the narrow gray borders with numbers. Full details with regard to reflectances and tolerances are tabulated in ASTM D5150.

Features

Practical application tools for architectural coatings, such as paint rollers and brushes, typically apply films that vary in thickness due to incomplete leveling. Thus the effective one coat hiding power of most architectural paints is considerably less than that determined by customary laboratory procedures, which generally call for uniform films applied with a blade applicator.

A laboratory procedure that measures practical hiding power is therefore needed for a complete testing program. Form CU-M1 provides a substantial test area, small enough for routine laboratory procedures but large enough to permit convincing practical application tests. Its numbered gradation stripes enable the operator to numerically evaluate practical opacity and hiding power, based on the ability of the applied paint film to visually obscure the stripes.

Test Procedure

  1. Determine the density of the coating in g/mL or lb/gal (note: g/mL = lb/U.S. gal ÷ 8.345)
  2. Place the chart against a smooth vertical surface, with its long edges horizontal, and tape it firmly in that position along the vertical edges leaving the numbers visible.
  3. Apply the paint uniformly over the entire test area with a 3 inch (75mm) roller or paint brush at either a “natural” or a specified spreading rate, determining the amount of paint applied by weight loss of the container plus applicator.
  4. Calculate or control the spreading rate in accordance with one of the following equations:
    Weight (grams) x Spreading Rate (m2/L) = 557.4 x Density (g/mL)
    Weight (grams) x Spreading Rate (ft2/gal) = 2721.6 x Density (lb/gal)
  5. After the paint-out has dried, record the number of the darkest stripe for which the contrast is sufficiently low to be considered as “just visible”, or “decoratively acceptable”. That number is the practical hiding power rating. In case of uncertainty between two adjacent stripes, report an intermediate fractional number.
The procedure described in ASTM Method D5150 is somewhat different than the above, having been designed specifically for roller application tests performed in a specialized manner.

The semi-transparent nature of printing ink applications causes the substrate color to have a substantial effect on the final color of the print. An ink color control program based on instrumental color measurements therefore requires that the test substrate itself be very closely controlled. The normal batch to batch variations in the white area of conventional paint test charts can represent a problem in that regard when testing inks. This problem is avoided by the use of Form PC-2C-S illustrated.

Form PC-2C-S is similar in surface characteristics to other Leneta charts except for closer shade control in the white areas. Its printed face is coated with a clear, impervious lacquer film, similar to a plastic in printing characteristics. The unprinted reverse side is a representative litho coated paper surface.

This is a sealed paint test chart with six stripes on a white field, ranging in shade from light to dark gray and black. The stripes are numbered from 1 to 6 with increasing darkness and provide contrast steps suitable for demonstrating the hiding power of typical trade sales coatings.

The reflectance values of the numbered stripes are selected with the objective that their color differences with respect to the white surround will be in the geometric sequence: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 CIELAB units. The defining variable for the gray stripes is not reflectances as such, but the ratio of the gray to white reflectance, G/W. The table gives their specifications and tolerances, which are the same as stated in ASTM Method D5150 for Form CU-1.

2. This is ΔE*ab, the color difference with respect to the white background, expressed in CIELAB units as defined in ASTM Method D2244.
3. G/W = (1 - ΔE*ab/107.7)3. This equation is derived from ASTM Method D2244 and assumes that for neutral gray versus white, the values ΔE*ab and ΔL* are sufficiently close to be considered equal for the purpose of this test method.
4. These values vary somewhat with the reflectance W of the white area, which is normally 80 ± 2% inter-batch and ± 0.5% intra batch. Values shown here are calculated for W = 80%.

Test Procedure

  1. Apply the paint with a 6 mil clearance (nominal 3 mil wet) film applicator and allow the film to dry.
  2. Report the hiding power as the number of the stripe that is almost but not completely obscured.
  3. For a more accurate hiding end point use a visual comparison standard (Contrast Ratio: 0.98).
  4. If the hiding end point falls between two consecutive stripes, add a fractional estimate.
  5. If a hiding power end point is not observable because the film hides too well or too poorly, reapply the paint with an applicator of higher or lower clearance as required to obtain an end point.
  6. The complete hiding power report should state the applicator clearance along with the shade number of the hiding end point.

Skin Tone Color Chart

Human skin tones vary from beige to almost black. Color cosmetics are designed to mask, enhance or modify the user's skin tone. Depending on a person's skin tone, the result of using different cosmetic colorants can vary from slight to dramatic.

A new tool for representing a variety of skin tone colors was introduced at the May 2001 meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. In a paper presented by Engelhard Corporation, Leneta Form 25C was noted as "A novel skin tone chart… [with]… excellent color shade uniformity, color density, reproducibility, non-fluorescence and surface smoothness." When cosmetics are applied on this chart, their effect with various skin tone colors can be readily evaluated, both visually and instrumentally.

Wall-Matte Charts

Wall-Matte Charts

These charts are coated with a flat finish similar in texture and "tooth" to a typical trade sales flat wall paint. Paints can be applied on them by brush or roller with assurance that there will be no surface "skid" during application.

The surface is well sealed, so that both waterborne and solventborne coatings can be applied with no absorption of vehicle. Wall-Matte charts are an effective replacement for previously available Kem-Glo Test Paper, and superior to that product in imperviousness and paper rigidity.
