Surface Finish Testing

Precision instrument measures damage to surfaces not classified as ordinary wear.

Using precision tips, the Taber Multi-Finger Scratch/Mar Tester is used to measure the susceptibility of material surfaces to scratching, marring, gouging and other similar physical damage not classified as ordinary wear.

Design based on five finger scratching device described in automotive specifications.
Specimens are secured to a pneumatically driven platform. Five independent spline-shaft fingers with varying weights exert a constant, vertical load on the test specimen as it travels under interchangeable scratch tips. Spline-shaft fingers are mounted on a rigid gantry platform. Support rests allow the operator to secure individual shafts in a rest position, permitting the testing of non-standard width samples.

Test a wide range of products.
The ‘five-finger’ scratch tester has been popular in the automotive industry for testing smooth or grained plastics commonly used in ornamentation or trim. Useful for quality control as well as material or product development, the Multi-Finger Scratch/Mar Tester is ideal for evaluation of plastics, rigid organic materials, paints and coatings, soft metals, linoleum and many more.

This method is appropriate in the evaluation of mar resistance of molded-in-color automotive thermoplastics used for interior or exterior in ornamentation or trim applications.
PF-10938 (Chrysler) Scratch and Mar - Resistance of Molded-In- Color Plastic Components This standard establishes the minimum requirements for engineering acceptance of scratch and mar resistance of molded-in-color plastic parts. The ultimate objective is to produce molded plastic parts which resist scratching and marring and thus are not aesthetically detracting from the vehicle and/or hinder the quality appearance of the vehicle. Additionally, this standard is to verify that after the molding process that molded-in stresses are not adversely affecting the resistance to scratching or marring of the material.
BN 108-13 (Ford) Resistance to Scratching WITHDRAWN - This procedure is used to determine the resistance to scratching on surfaces of plastic or other materials under standard conditions. [superseded by BO 162-01]
BO 162-01 (Ford) Resistance to Scratch and Mar This procedure is used to determine the resistance to scratching, whitening and marring on surfaces of plastic or other materials under standard conditions.
GMN 3943 (General Motors) Scratch and Mar Resistance of Plastics, Five Arm Test WITHDRAWN - This test method describes a testing device and procedure for evaluation of the scratch and mar resistance of plastics. [superseded by GMW 14698]
GMW 14698 (General Motors) Scratch Resistance of Organic Coatings and Self- Adhesive Foils This standard shall be used to determine the scratch resistance of organic coatings applicable to single or multiple coat systems applied onto metallic or polymeric substrates and self-adhesive foils.
NES M0159 (Nissan) Testing Method of the Scratch Resistance of Interior Polypropylene Resin Parts This NES specifies the methods for testing the scratch resistance (hereinafter referred to as test methods) of automotive interior resin parts (hereinafter referred to as parts). These test methods are applied specifically to the parts made of polypropylene (hereinafter referred to as PP) and its compound materials (hereinafter referred to as PPC) of interior resin parts. These test modes shall not be applied to a painted portion, or a surface coated plastic part.
