The ergonomic handle design gives comfortable and precision control in cross hatch adhesion testing. It helps keep your hand in a natural position, preventing strain and fatigue. One cross cut blade handle can be used for both a right or left handed person. Due to the accuracy of the spacings and the speed with which the test can be conducted, the multiple tooth cutter is the preferred tool for use in cross hatch paint adhesion testing.

- Make a lattice pattern in the film with the appropriate tool, cutting to the substrate.
- Brush several times lightly backwards and forwards, using a soft brush or tissue to remove any detached flakes or ribbons of coatings.
- Place a tape over the cut, smooth it firmly with a fingertip and remove the tape.
- Examine the grid area using an illuminated magnifier.
ASTM D 3359 Standard describe that the number of cuts shall be 6 or 11. The spacing of the cuts in each direction shall be equal and shall depend on the thickness of the coating as follows:
11 cut lines for 1 mm/1.5 mm cutter used at film thickness up to 50μm (2 mils)
6 cut lines for 2 mm cutter used at films thickness between 50-125μm (2 - 5 mils)
DIN EN ISO 2409 standard describe that the number of cuts shall be 6. The spacing of the cuts in each direction shall be equal and shall depend on the thickness of the coating and on the type of substrate as follows:
1 mm space for hard substrates (metal) 0 - 60μm
2 mm space for soft substrates (plastic) 0 - 60μm
2 mm space for hard or soft substrates 61 - 120μm
3 mm space for hard or soft substrate 121 - 250μm
