| Hardness Test Rod Model 318 |
A Pocket-Size Hardness Tester
![]() |
This instrument measures hardness of protective coatings. The degree of hardness of paint films, plastic coatings, etc. can be accurately measured and recorded, no matter whether on a level or curved surface. The spring tension is set with the help of the slider. Holding the instrument upright and placing it's point on the test surface one draws a 5 to 10 mm long line at a rate of approx. 10mm p/sec. If the spring pressure is too high, the scratch is clearly visible: if too low, no scratch appears. By locking the slider every time one can control the applied pressure which is marked in Newtons. Thus, one can gradually approach the correct setting. Three scales are engraved into the pencil for the three pressure ranges: 1.0- 3N(accuracy 0.1 N), 20-10 N (accuracy 0-5 N), 3.0-20 N (accuracy 1.0 N). |

This pocket instrument allows hardness tests on flat and curved surfaces. The instrument consists of a sleeve with a pressure spring that can be bent to various tensions by using a slide. The spring acts on a tungsten carbide needle (1.0 mm / 0.04 in.) with its tip extending out of the sleeve. A locking screw fixes the slide, thus maintaining constant spring tension. Protect spring from fatigue, therefore, always set tension value at zero when not in use. Three pressure springs of varying strengths ranging from 0-20 N (0-2000g) are available to cover a large hardness range. |
| Procedure |
| Test coating may not be elastic. Place the top of the Dur-O-Test on the test
surface and draw a line approx. 10mm (0.4 in.) long over a period of 1 second, maintaining
sufficient pressure to keep the needle against the rod stop. If the tension has been too high
the surface will be clearly marked. If too low, there will be no mark. The correct tension will
result in a barely visible mark. Three interchangeable springs of varying strengths correspond
to the test ranges engraved on the barrel: No. 1 of 0 — 300 gms, each div. = 10 gms No. 2 of 0 — 1000 gms, each div. = 50 gms No. 3 of 0 — 2000 gms, each div. = 100 gms |
