Principles of Measuring Chalking
A clean, completely transparent adhesive strip specially suited for the measurement is affixed to the weathered coating and rubbed free of air bubbles with a soft plastic paten. The imprint on the adhesive strip after it is removed is measured according to the analytical principles of nephelometry with the Helmen®-Chalking Tester Model H 100. The instrument must be previously calibrated with a clean (unused) adhesive strip. In a series of measurements, checking the calibration every five measurements is sufficient. Depending upon the quality of the adhesive strip, chalking between 0 and 10% can be pretended. Therefore, results under 10% are not considered chalking. This area of 0 to 10% is marked in green on the instrument. |
