DF-233 Dry Film Thickness Gage
In Accordance With ISO 2808, ASTM D 1005, BS 3900: C.S.
Principle & Design
| The difference in height between the surface of the coating material and an exposed part of the base material is measured by means of the dial gage plunger which is free to move and the two feet which are placed onto the surface of the coating. The dial gage has a chromium plated metal housing. The feet which protrude from the base of the dial gage togetherwith the plunger are protected by a cap. A notch in this cap is used for the adjustment of the instrument, which is set with the aid of a flat glass plate, also supplied. The dial gage with accessories is supplied in a lined case. | ![]() |
Measuring Procedure
Place gage onto flat glass plate perpendicularly. If pointer does not show zero, turn plunger until zero reading is obtained. At the point where the measurement is to be made, carefully scrape off a 3mm gap down to the base material. Place dial gage in position so that the plunger is in contact with the base material and read off dry film thickness in μm. In the case of soft coatings, place a razor blade under the test for support.

Conforms To ISO 2802, ASTM D 1005, BS 3900: C5
Test Priciples:
| Differences in height are measured between the surface of the wet coating and the base by means of the plunger which is adjustable by hand while the dial gage instrument is supported on the two feet resting on the base material. | ![]() |
Wet Measuring Procedure:
For measurements on wet films the plunger is initially raised to obtain a reading on the pointer of 0.05mm above the level of the feet. The dial gage is then placed onto the wet film so the feet touch the base surface. The plunger is then lowered slowly with the help of the knurled screw until it just touches the surface of the wet film. The film thickness is then read off in μm on the dial.
Dry Measuring Procedure:
Place gage onto flat glass plate perpendicularly. If pointer does not show zero, turn plunger until zero reading is obtained. At the point where the measurement is to be made, carefully scrape off a 3mm gap down to the base material. Place dial gage in position so that the plunger is in contact with the base material and read off dry film thickness in μm.
