This gauge is designed for evaluation of the dispersion attained in the premixing of ink.
It can detect finer particles than most Fineness of Grind Gauges.
The gauge is a hardened steel block which lays down a wedge-shape film by means of a slightly slanted opening or gap ground into the lower edge of one long side. In making the test, the sample is drawn across a glassplate for a distance of 1/4 inch or more. Evaluation is made by noting the point on the scale where 4 or more scratches first appear, and again, the point where 10 or more scratches appear. The greater the difference, the wider is the range of coarse particles.

Recommendations
The 24 mil gauge is recommended as a starter gauge. The length of the drawdown should be only a quarter inch. The scratch counts from at least 3, preferably 4, drawdowns should be averaged per test sample.
The significance ratio should be applied to the scratch count data in order to evaluate the influence of premixing variables such as time and formulation.
The most obvious immediate use of the Premix Gauge is for plant laboratory personnel to set up optimum premixing procedures for a specific formulation.
Adequate plant testing should be carried out to determine the utility of the Premix Gauge as a routine quality control tool.
