New Design
The Comparator 3000 (AF228) and Petroleum Oil Comparator (AF650) have now been replaced by one new design that combines the strengths of both previous instruments, with a number of significant advantages.

Petroleum Color Comparator


  • Improved appearance and ergonomics.
  • Constructed from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) Fire Retardant Plastic. This robust, chemically resistant material is ideal for industrial environments.
  • Single press of large switch illuminates sample for one minute (two presses = two minutes, three presses = three minutes). So no energy and bulb wastage.
  • Halogen, long life, light source combined with standard daylight filters ensures full compliance with old units and consistency from unit to unit.
  • Low voltage power supply.
  • Disk values read directly from disks.
  • Disk can be simply, but securely, removed allowing replacement if necessary.
  • A new replaceable white insert is included with each instrument to ensure correct lighting levels are preserved. The old models white painted internals often became contaminated and discolored over time.
  • Packs of 3 white insert replacements can be ordered when needed (as with the current Model F instrument).
  • As with the PFX and PFXi ranges, fully removable sample chamber allows quick cleanup of inevitable spillages.


Operating on the 3-field principle, whereby the sample can be viewed between two adjacent steps on the color scale, this instrument is calibrated to give readings according to the specifications laid down in ASTM D1500. Color grading is made more precise and faster with the 3 field viewing configuration. The color standards can be set at the two limiting values of a specification, making it easy to see if a sample falls within the limits. The color-corrected halogen light source closely corresponds to illuminant C of the CIE system, guaranteeing the correct quality of the light and an even field of view.

The color glass standards are mounted on discs in the following configuration:

Disc 1: 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5
Disc 2: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0
A calibration certificate is supplied confirming that the glass color standards conform to the required colorimetric coordinates of ASTM D1500.
