Liquid Color Standards range from water white through yellow to deep amber. Liquid Standards 1 through 8 are solutions of potassium chloroplatinate. They are light in value, have a very slight greenish hue and are most often used in testing unheated liquids. Standards 9 through 18 are solutions of ferric chloride and cobalt chloride; they are darker and are generally used to test varnishes, oil and resins which have reached color through heating.

The solutions are standardized at 25°C (77°F), but determinations made between 20° and 30°C are substantially correct. Standards are held in a rack so a sample can be inserted next to any standard for comparison. The Liquid Color Standards are available with or without illumination source.
